The Country
Taiwan is located off the southeastern coast of China. In 2000, Taiwan underwent its first peaceful transfer of power from the Nationalist to the Democratic Progressive Party. The dominant political issues continue to be the relationship between Taiwan and China – specifically the question of eventual reunification, as well as domestic, political and economic reform.
The Children
Children of all ages, including infants, toddlers, and older children, are available for adoption in Taiwan. Special needs children, as well as siblings, can also be placed for adoption. There are both boys and girls in need of families, but there are often more boys than girls waiting for families.
If adopting an older child, the Taiwanese officials allow our families to send photos and letters to the child during the wait for the adoption to be completed. In country social workers work with the child so that the child will know their new family loves them from afar. They do a wonderful job of preparing the child for the adjustment of adoption.
Parent Eligibility
Applicants for FHSA's Taiwan Program must be Florida Residents. Both parents must be between the ages of 30 and 40. All applicants must have a BMI under 40. Adoptive parents must have been married for at least five years with no more than one biological child already in the family. Exceptions to the number-of-children rule are made for families with more than one adopted child.
Waiting Child Program
Exceptions are made for families interested in Waiting Children or families who have previously used FHSA's services to adopt from Taiwan. There are many children with special needs who need a forever family. Some of these children are Waiting only due to their age or if they are part of a sibling group. Fees are often reduced. Please see the Waiting Child link on our web site.
The primary goal is to find parents that will commit to love, protect and care for the child being adopted. In Taiwan, birth mothers are given the option of participating in the selection of adoptive parents for the child being adopted.
Please see our agency information page for further guidelines.
Referral
Adoptive parents must submit to Taiwan a family photo album, Home Study, I-171H, and birth family letter. This will be used to match the family with their child.
In Taiwan, birth families are given the option of participating in the selection of adoptive parents for the child. As a result, waiting times can vary greatly. The referral time can be much shorter for adoptive families open to older children, children with special needs and sibling groups that are Waiting.
Travel
Once an adoptive family has been selected and the family accepts the child referred to them, they can expect to travel about 5 months after submission of the adoption papers. A dossier is completed after receiving and accepting a referral. This allows time for the adoption to be processed through the court system in Taiwan. The family can expect to spend approximately 3 to 5 days traveling to complete the adoption in Taiwan.
Post Adoption
You will be required to complete Post Adoption reports with your Social Worker when you return home with your child. In addition, Taiwan required letters 3 and 6 months after you return home and annual letters for several years.
